Airburst Flamenco Dynasties Make Up CCE’s FlamenGo

May 2015

Working in a traditional genre like flamenco and creating a personal path while dealing with history is hard enough for any artist. But if you are José Enrique Morente, 25, and are a budding cantaor, son of the late, great flamenco singer Enrique Morente and the younger brother of flamenco superstar singer Estrella Morente; or you are guitarist Juan Habichuela Nieto, 25, and you happen to be the grandson of master flamenco guitarist Juan Carmona, better know as Juan Habichuela -- then the weight of expectations can easily become unbearable. -

KF ‘Romeo & Juliet,’ outside the box and under the stars

May 2015

As much a block party on a mild May evening in Miami as a reinterpretation of classic Shakespeare, the performance of “Romeo & Juliet Outside the Box”on the plaza of the YoungArts’ Biscayne Boulevard campus Friday delivered what its creators, playwright, actor and director Tarell Alvin McCraney and filmmaker Andrew Hevia had promised: an experience.

March 2015

Drummer Yissy Garcia, the daughter of Bernardo García, an influential drummer in Cuban music, charter member of the fabled Afro-Cuban jazz rock group Irakere and trumpeter Arturo Sandoval’s band, was supposed to be a dancer, a ballerina.

“They would take me to dance lessons and I’d go crying, all the way. I didn’t want to go. They would give the sticks to my brother,” recalls García, 27. Today, Horacio “El Negro” Hernández, arguably the premier Cuban drummer of his generation, and has known García since she was a child, calls her “the leading figure in modern Cuban drumming.” -

Independent Cuban film: A revolution in the revolution

March 2015

One of the most intriguing series in the 32nd Miami International Film Festival is, without a doubt, the Emerging Cuban Program. Smartly made with limited means by an enterprising young generation of directors, some not yet in their 30s, the films include both features and shorts, dramatic pieces and documentaries.
Don’t expect car chases, explosions and special effects — or obvious political statements. Here, silences often speak louder than words, scenes breathe slowly, shots linger and even the lighting, more often the darkness, make subtle statements.

Jazz pianist Rubalcaba to punctuate Global Cuba Fest

March 2015

Cuba seems to produce pianists the way Brazil produces soccer players.
The quality and quantity is astonishing — but so is the continuity of a piano tradition that has transcended economic ups and downs, social change and the vagaries of changing political regimes throughout the twentieth century.
